Description

These Vanilla French Beignets are soft, pillowy, lightly sweetened fried pastries dusted generously with powdered sugar. Perfect for a café-style breakfast or dessert.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (105–115°F)
  • 1/4 ounce active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting


Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Whisk in the egg, vanilla extract, salt, and melted butter.
  3. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for 4–5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down dough and roll it out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into squares or desired shapes.
  6. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry beignets in batches until golden, about 1 minute per side.
  7. Drain on paper towels and dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the dough.
