Description
Delicious baked French Onion Gnocchi with caramelized onions, tender gnocchi, and melted Gruyere or Swiss cheese. A perfect cheesy and savory comfort dish.
Ingredients
- White wine – 1/4 cup
- Unsalted butter – 1 tbsp, room temperature
- Olive oil – 1 tbsp
- Beef broth – 2 cups
- Sweet onion – 1 large, thinly sliced
- Gnocchi – 1 lb, fresh or frozen
- Fresh thyme – 1 tbsp minced (or 1 tsp dried)
- Salt and pepper – to taste
- French bread – 8–10 slices (day-old works best, for topping or serving)
- Shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese – 1 cup
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, melt olive oil and butter together. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized (about 20 minutes).
- Deglaze the pan with white wine, scraping up browned bits. Add thyme and beef broth and bring to a simmer.
- Add gnocchi and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and sauce thickens (5–10 minutes).
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer mixture to a greased medium baking dish, spread evenly, and top with shredded cheese.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes until cheese is lightly browned and gnocchi is bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Serve with French bread slices for dipping.
Notes
- Slow-cooking onions develops maximum sweetness and flavor.
- Gruyere cheese provides deeper flavor; Swiss cheese can be used as a milder alternative.
- Use day-old French bread for best topping/dipping results.
