Description

Homemade California Roll Sushi is a classic inside-out maki roll made with sushi rice, nori seaweed, imitation crab (surimi), avocado, and cucumber, coated in sesame seeds for a delicious and beginner-friendly sushi experience.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sushi rice, cooked
  • 1/2 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced
  • 6 pieces imitation crab (surimi)
  • 2 sheets nori seaweed
  • 4 tablespoons Japanese mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Place nori on a plastic-wrapped sushi mat.
  2. Spread half the sushi rice evenly over the nori.
  3. Flip the sheet so the rice is on the outside.
  4. Add a thin layer of rice on one half, leaving a small border.
  5. Spread mayonnaise in a line across the center.
  6. Add cucumber, avocado slices, and imitation crab in a line.
  7. Roll tightly using the sushi mat, pressing firmly to shape.
  8. Sprinkle sesame seeds on the mat and roll the sushi to coat.
  9. Slice into 8 pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use properly seasoned sushi rice for best results.
  • Imitation crab can be replaced with real crab or cooked shrimp.
  • Use plain nori sheets for authentic flavor.
  • Roll slowly and tightly for clean sushi slices.
  • Black or white sesame seeds both work well.
